Immigration Roger Daniels Immigration and immigration policy have been an integral part of the American polity since the early years of the American Republic. Until late in the nineteenth century it had been the aim of American policy, and thus its diplomacy, to facilitate the entrance of free immigrants. From the s until World War II —an era of immigration restriction of increasing severity—the diplomacy of immigration was chiefly concerned with the consequences of keeping some people out and, after , when Congress made the diplomatic establishment partially responsible for immigration selection and its control, with keeping some prospective immigrants out.

Since , after only seemingly minor changes in policy during World War II, and partly due to the shift in American foreign policy from quasi-isolation to a quest for global leadership and hegemony, immigration policy has become less and less restrictive. Cold War imperatives plus a growing tendency toward more egalitarian attitudes about ethnic and racial minorities contributed to a change in immigration policy.

Many foreigners clearly understood that there were certain ironies in these long-term changes.

History[ edit ] The practices of courtship in Western societies have changed dramatically in recent history. As late as the s, it was considered unorthodox for a young couple to meet without familial supervision in a tightly controlled structure. Compared with the possibilities offered by modern communications technology and the relative freedom of young adults, today’s dating scene is vastly different. Before the s, the primary reason for courting someone was to begin the path to marriage. It functioned as a way for each party’s family to gauge the social status of the other.

This was done in order to ensure a financially and socially compatible marriage. This form of courtship consisted of highly rigid rituals, including parlor visits and limited excursions. These meetings were all strictly surveyed, typically by the woman’s family, in order to protect the reputations of all involved and limit such possibilities as pregnancy. This manner of courtship system was mostly used by the upper and middle classes from the eighteenth century through the Victorian period.

The lower classes typically did not follow this system, focusing more on public meetings.

Symbolic Interactionism Symbolic interactionism is a sociological perspective on self and society based on the ideas of George H. Mead , Charles H. Cooley , W. Thomas , and other pragmatists associated, primarily, with the University of Chicago in the early twentieth century. The central theme of symbolic interactionism is that human life is lived in the symbolic domain. Symbols are culturally derived social objects having shared meanings that are created and maintained in social interaction.

Through language and communication, symbols provide the means by which reality is constructed.

Thank you, everyone, for coming here on Saturday night when there’s so much to do in the city of Chicago. It’s really a thrill for me to present this panel. For those of you I don’t know, because even though I’m from here, I think not all of you are family members, my name is Eric Klinenberg. I’m a professor at NYU, a colleague of our current president, Paula England, and the co-author of this book, Modern Romance, which I wrote with Aziz Ansari, who will be here in a minute.

Were you guys old friends in some random and very weird way? And actually, no, not at all. Anyone here at the New York conference two years ago? And so we wound up writing this book together over two years. And we talked to a lot of people, went around the world, talked to many, many sociology experts, whose research is featured in the book, it really is a book of social science and comedy together.

People like Andy Cherlin and Rob Willer and Stephanie Coontz who are here doing other panels, their work you know, you’ll find it in the book. But there’s also a bunch of other social scientists who are not sociologists, and I wanted to bring them here to let them get in on this conversation about Modern Romance as well. So this should be a really fun evening, and a really interesting evening as well. And I want to introduce the panel.

Dating, Mating and Relating: Additions were last made on Wednesday, May 7, Introduction The purpose of our project was to better understand dating patterns in college age students. Dating is an activity that most college age students are engaged in or are at least interested in. We chose a questionnaire with these questions: Please list the top five characteristics that attract others to you; Please list the top five characteristics that you are attracted to in others; Why Do You Date?

In our research for the project we examined many disciplines including history, sociology, psychology, biology, and chemistry. We also explored how cultural differences and non-traditional couples transgress main stream ideas about dating. This interdisciplinary research led us to a complex understanding about our topic. Dating is a practice that is influenced by the time period, social conditions and constructs, biology, cultural norms, and institutional structures that surround people.

The audience of this education project is our peers who are involved in college aged dating in the present. We hope to provide some background for them to understand why people date the way they do today. We want to educate our peers about the history of dating, and how the social and biological sciences evaluate the practice in modern times.
